How to ASM Smog Test a Pre-1996 Acura NSX.

So the Acura NSX vehicles that are the model year **1995** and older will require either a **ASM (Dyno) load test** or a **TSI (two speed idle) smog test** every 2 years in CA. Because OBD (onboard diagnostic) connectors did not become standard on most cars until 1996 the 1995 and older vehicles need to have the RPM pickup connected to one of the Coil-on-Plug wire connectors to get a stable RPM reading during the smog test.

*Here is the best way to go about getting the RPM pickup on this particular engine.*

**For ASM test** make sure to disengage the **TCS** (Traction Control System) on the car there is a button on the instrument cluster to disengage.

The NSX has a mid engine design so the engine compartment is located directly behind the driver and passenger seats.

Open the engine compartment. You will have to **remove the Coil beauty cover for Bank 2** on the engine (front bank) that is the bank closest to the driver and passenger cabin.

**Connect the RPM pick up** device to **Cylinder Number 6 Coil-on-Plug wires**. The is the Cylinder most near to the overflow reservoir tank. Cylinder 6 gives the most clearance for getting the RPM pickup device to go around all of the coil wires for the RPM pickup to work on the EIS Bar 97 smog machine.

Once the machine get a steady RPM signal it's time to put the car on the Dyno and start the ASM test. **For manual transmissions** start in **2nd gear** and *only upshift if the RPM range is too high* for the testing range.

**For TSI test** it is basically the same procedure without having to put the vehicle on the dyno rollers.

Hope this helps.
