Upon reaching Garihat, thou must make thy pilgrimage to Campari. (aryaner prachin probad)

One of those old-school South Kolkata snack institutions, check. Surviving on equal parts consistency and nostalgia, check. Running almost entirely on muscle memory, quality control and generations of loyal customers, check.

Case in point: Campari Gariahat. Generations have grown up on it and swear by it. I’ve had the pleasure of impaling many evening snack cravings there under the patronage of nearly every generation of the Mitra family, from the OG Ashok Kumar Mitra and Nadita Mitra, their son, to the current generation owners, Aadipto Mitra and Ayushi Mitra.

The rolls are still stuffed to the brink with meat and a heap of raw, slightly wilted onions. Sauces are frowned upon here. The spices come in subtle whispers, letting the filling do the talking. This isn’t a place interested in drowning flavour under mayonnaise/ketchup-based war crimes. The fish roll arrives wrapped tighter than a Burima dodoma before Kali Pujo, packed with flavour, punch and zero fishy nonsense. The crumb stays light and crisp, never greasy. Both rolls hit like a brick. You are full. Then comes the pocket pinch: roughly 200 bucks for both. If snack cravings start scratching at your brain around Gariahat, Campari remains one of the best fixes in town.

And kids, remember: don’t promise what you can’t deliver. Quality control over blind expansion is what keeps institutions alive.

P.S. Their Kashundi Slaps as well.

The Pilgrimage to Campari several times a year is a must!
