Curious about the author of Revelation

Question / Doubt

I was having a discussion last night with a brother, and the question came up: "who wrote the book of Revelation?" So I did a little digging and came to this:

  • There were two men mentioned in scripture that may have been the author:
    • John the Baptist
    • John the Apostle

John the Baptist couldn't have been the author, because we read in Matthew 14:1-12 the events that lead to him being beheaded because he was perceived as a threat to the emperor because of his belief in God and refused to stop spreading the gospel and would not concede and worship Herod. John the Baptist was also the cousin of Jesus, and was beheaded before Christs' ascension into heaven.

John the Apostle was exiled to Patmos, a Greek island set aside as a penal colony for criminals. It was here in a cave that today is known as the "Cave of the Apocalypse", because it was here that Jesus through the Holy Spirit spoke to him, and revealed what was to come as we read in Revelation 1:9, where John tells us where he is, and why he is there.

John the Apostle was eventually freed from Patmos, and returned to Ephesus where he died of old age.

Wanted to share this with the community as for the longest time I thought John the Baptist was exiled to Patmos, but he wasn't - if anyone has a different POV please do share...
