Asteriod slinging

Questions my fellow space explorers.

Are there pros and cons to tossing asteriods into planets?

Im understanding that if you sling asteriods into planets like mars, the resources will need to be mined. Is there risk of losing certain resources though that will require you to place it in orbit and mine it instead?

Any advice and tips would help. Its hard to locate certain information with the game being new and I don't think there is a guide for asteriod slinging so far. (That im aware of).
