moved my emergency fund from a bank to USDC lending – then moved it back

this was my "I'm so smart" moment that turned into a "I'm an idiot" moment

saw the difference between my bank savings rate (0.5%) and USDC lending rates (~4-5% APY on major protocols) and thought: why am I leaving my emergency fund in a bank earning nothing when it could earn 10x more on-chain?

moved $8K – my full emergency fund – into USDC on a lending protocol. the math checked out. $8K at 5% = $400/year vs $40/year at the bank. extra $360 for "doing nothing"

month 1: everything fine. earned about $33. felt smug about it

month 2: a protocol on a different chain got exploited. wasn't my protocol but it made me realize my emergency fund was sitting in a smart contract that could theoretically be drained. started losing sleep

month 3: needed $2,000 for an unexpected car repair. the "emergency" part of emergency fund became relevant. withdrawal took about 10 minutes and cost $6 in gas. not terrible. but the 10 minutes felt like an hour because I was stressed about the transaction confirming while the mechanic waited for payment

that last experience settled it. moved everything back to the bank except $2K that I keep in stablecoin lending as non-emergency savings

the logic: an emergency fund's primary job is being accessible instantly with zero friction when you're already stressed about whatever the emergency is. adding smart contract risk, gas fees, and transaction confirmation anxiety to that equation defeats the purpose. the extra $360/year isn't worth the mental overhead when something actually goes wrong

stablecoin lending is great for money you can afford to leave untouched for months. it's terrible for money you might need at 2am on a Saturday when your water heater explodes
