what actually happens when an owner only pays part of what they owe?

partial redemptions dont come up much in the guides but they happen, and the first time you run into one its confusing.

say the owner scrapes together enough to cover some of the delinquency but not all of it. depending on the state, that money can go toward the oldest certificate first, or get applied proportionally, or the county might not accept a partial payment at all. some states let the owner enter a payment plan with the county, which quietly extends your timeline while you sit there wondering why nothing is moving. and if youve been paying subsequent years taxes to protect your position, working out what youre actually owed and in what order gets messy fast.

the practical thing is knowing before you bid how your state handles it, because it changes when you get paid and sometimes whether your foreclosure clock even keeps running. anyone here had a lien go partial, how did your county handle it and did it change what you were owed?
