Today in Tech
On April 23, 2005, the very first video was uploaded to YouTube. Titled “Me at the zoo,” it was posted by co-founder Jawed Karim and features him standing in front of elephants at the San Diego Zoo, casually commenting on their trunks. At just 18 seconds long, this simple clip marked the beginning of what would become the world’s largest video-sharing platform. At the time, YouTube was still in beta and hadn't yet been acquired by Google (that happened in November 2006 for $1.65 billion). Looking back, this modest upload revolutionized media sharing and consumption forever. In today’s age of TikToks and livestreams, do we underestimate the profound cultural shift sparked by one short clip in front of some elephants?
