Question: Towing a towable smoker on a trailer?
So, I'm looking at buying a homemade smoker from a guy a couple hours away. It's a modified propane tank on wheels with a 2" ball and I was assuming I could tow it back. The seller says he's not comfortable that it would tow that far as it hasn't moved in a couple years (fair enough). So I'm looking to rent a uhaul trailer with a ramp that can handle the load (6x12). With that background, I have two questions:
-
How do I load the smoker safely? Ideally the guy would have a vehicle that could back the smoker onto my trailer while it's still attached (parking brake on, obviously). If not, maybe detach my trailer, chock the wheels and back it on myself? Use a come along and pull it onto the trailer? Any advice/insight on the matter would be appreciated.

How best do I secure the smoker on the trailer? My current plan is to chock the wheels, ratchet strap the wheels to the corners of the trailer and use as many ratchet straps as I can borrow to strap down the smoker. Any advice or insight on this approach would be appreciated.
I've searched google a bit and haven't found any satisfactory answers or discussion (closest being loading a vehicle on a trailer or one guy trying to load a boat and trailer on another trailer).
Other factors: My vehicle can safely tow 5000 lbs and uhaul says that gives me 2700 lbs I can tow on the trailer (I am sure the smoker doesn't weight more than half that). I've towed trailers longer distances, but usually enclosed trailers or more easily secured loads in open utility trailers. The drive back will not be interstate speeds (55mph will be the max speed limit on my route), but it there will be some winding inclines and descents.
