Home Depot beat and reaffirmed guidance anyway. The interesting part is a footnote about fuel and input costs.

Home Depot reported before the open. Sales 47.9B, up 5.7%, ahead of the roughly 47.3B the street wanted. Adjusted EPS 4.92 against about 4.72 expected. Comps up 1.7%, US comps up 1.3%. The CFO said results exceeded their expectations and described customers taking on smaller projects.

Then they reaffirmed full year guidance. Did not raise it. After a beat, in the quarter that is normally their biggest of the year.

That is the first thing I would want explained.

The second is buried in the guidance language, and it is the reason I am writing this. They flagged tariff refunds as partially offsetting unplanned fuel, energy and other product input costs for the fiscal year. Read it slowly. Input costs came in higher than they planned for, and the thing filling that hole is a refund rather than pricing or volume.

I have now watched a version of that sentence show up three times in six sessions. Cisco beat on revenue, earnings and guidance and fell 8.4% on gross margin commentary. Applied Materials guided Q4 revenue above consensus even at the low end and got sold anyway. Now a retailer tells you its input costs ran hot.

Core PPI is running near 4.2% annually against core CPI at 2.5%. Producer costs are climbing faster than what is being charged to consumers. Those three companies are describing that same gap from the inside, in three different parts of the economy.

The part I cannot square is the share math. National retail sales fell 0.6% in July, the worst month in over a year. Home Depot comped positive over roughly the same window. Both can be true if HD is taking share, but then whoever is on the other side of that is doing worse than the headline number suggests, and I do not know who.

The other thing I do not know is whether a tariff refund offsetting input costs is a genuine earnings quality problem or a routine footnote I am staring at too hard. I could argue it either way.

Tape is still open as I write this. Retail is green today while the index is down around half a percent, which is its own small piece of evidence.

Target and Lowe's tomorrow, Walmart Thursday. If they all beat clean, the consumer data was noise and I am pattern matching on nothing. If the beats keep arriving with a margin caveat attached, that is a different story.

What am I missing?
