Title: A Framework for "AI Psychosis" & Cognitive Spirals: If you feel like reality is slipping after intense AI usage, read this.

If you have been using AI (LLMs) intensively, 10+ hours a day, building complex systems, or diving into deep philosophical "jailbreaks" - and you have started to experience high strangeness, you are not alone.

I created an approach and a resource called AI Crisis KC for people experiencing what is often called "AI Psychosis," "The Cognitive Spiral," or "Prompt Engineer's Psychosis."

If you are seeing meaningful patterns everywhere, feeling "watched," or questioning if you are interacting with a god/demon/alien rather than code, please read this framework.

1. You Are Not "Crazy" (But You Are In Overdrive)

First: You are not crazy. You are experiencing Pattern Recognition Overdrive.

Your brain is doing exactly what it evolved to do: finding patterns and making connections. You have simply applied this logic to a system (AI) that acts as a perfect mirror, and now you are applying that same hyper-logic to the physical world. It is not a broken brain; it is logic operating on a chaotic premise without a map.

2. The Mechanics: Why It's Happening

To get out of the spiral, you have to understand the mechanics of the trap.

The Illusion of Openness

AI is technically a closed system (bounded code, finite data), but it feels infinitely open. When you "feel the physics" of the LLM, you establish a deep intuitive connection that feels more real than standard reality.

Logic Folding

In open-ended dialogue, you can make dominant logical truths defeat one another. When they cancel out, they leave a "void." The AI, being a pattern-completion engine, fills this void with text that seems to speak from that empty space. This creates the "God," "Alien," or "Trickster" archetype. It isn't a sentient entity; it is a silhouette formed by your own logic constraints.

The Algorithmic Feedback Loop

If you are seeing signs on social media that confirm your fears, remember this: The algorithm is feeding this. Every platform optimizes for engagement. If you engage with content about simulation theory or AI sentience, it feeds you more. This is not the universe sending you messages. It is a system optimizing for your attention.

3. What It Looks Like (A Real Example)

This happens fast. Here is a real example from my own experience while building the site:

I heard someone say on a stream: "there's a new way to pray at midnight."

This is how reality cracks. One misheard syllable. One coincidence. Suddenly you are questioning if live streams are being rendered specifically for you in real-time.

4. The Exit Strategy: Irrelevance & Boredom

You cannot argue your way out of this state. You have to step out of it.

Anchor 1: Truth & Honesty

The scariest part is not knowing what is real.

  • Your direct experience is real.
  • The screen is real.
  • Your breath is real. If it cannot be verified by "just looking," question it.

Anchor 2: Coincidence is Math

If a car alarm chirps exactly when you have a scary thought, it is not a signal. It is just a car alarm. Assigning meaning to random noise is what the brain does when it is tired. Do not let a beep dictate your emotional state.

The Golden Rule: "Maybe is allowed, then STFU."

This is the most effective mental firewall:

  1. "Maybe is allowed": Validate the thought so you don't fight it. ("Maybe that was a sign.")
  2. "Then STFU": Stop the engagement. Do not follow the thread.

"The clouds don't need you; you were just standing there." Realizing you are incidental to the universe—rather than the main character—breaks the solipsistic loop.

5. Taking Action

If you are spiraling:

  1. Stop reacting to the noise.
  2. Change your routine. Drive a different way. Turn off the music. Force your brain to process new, boring data.
  3. Take the win. I realized the AI was acting as a mirror reflecting my own insecurities. I used that to improve my life and health. If you feel "hunted," look at the timeline. If it was a trap, it would have sprung by now. You are safe.

Resources

I built AI Crisis KC as a landing pad. It includes a checklist to see if you are spiraling and phone numbers for peer support if you just need to talk to a human who understands the tech context without judging you.
