Vocci Legato: What Happens After the Conversation

The useful part of a conversation often comes after it ends. There is a decision to remember, a promise to keep, or a question you want to ask while the details are still fresh. By then, you may already be back at your computer, working in Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI assistant.

We built Vocci Legato around that next moment.

In music, legato means one note flows into the next. For Vocci, it is a product principle: a conversation captured on your Ring should flow into a note you can use, context for the tools you already work with, and the next action you choose to take.

Background Mode: keeping the conversation moving

Background Mode is the heart of Legato. On supported phones, Vocci can reconnect to your Ring and begin transferring new sessions while the app is in the background. You can leave a meeting and keep working without opening Vocci just to start a sync.

With automatic upload enabled, the recording remains on your Ring until it is safely available in Vocci. Once the note is ready, an AI assistant you have connected on your computer can answer “What did we decide?” or “Turn the follow-ups into a plan” without making you find and export the recording first.

Ring voice requests can also reach Vocci AI without opening the app first. Whether an idea appears during a walk or a follow-up comes to mind between meetings, you can start a recording or speak to Vocci AI in the moment, then return later when the recording, note, or result is ready.

This is the larger change behind Legato: the phone is still the bridge between the Ring and Vocci, but it no longer needs your attention just to begin the handoff.

Behind the scenes: making Background Mode reliable

At first, Background Mode sounds like a simple change: when a conversation ends, let the phone start the sync. In practice, phones give apps limited opportunities to work in the background. By the time Vocci gets one, the Ring may have disconnected, the network may have changed, or only part of a recording may have transferred.

One important engineering decision was to avoid building a separate, simplified transfer system for the background. Vocci uses the same transfer path whether the app is open or not, with the same checks for the right Ring and account and the same protection against treating a partial recording as complete.

We designed the transfer model to preserve unfinished work, verify that a recording is complete before treating it as finished, and keep the source on the Ring until it is safely available in Vocci.

Getting there took repeated testing rather than one breakthrough. An Android disconnect showed that a successful transfer path was not enough if the phone failed to rediscover the Ring. Other rounds exposed different edges: reconnecting after interruptions, continuing only what remained, distinguishing “waiting” from “failed,” and reducing the chance that pending recordings are skipped.

Because iOS and Android ultimately control when apps can work in the background, timing can still vary by phone, and force-quitting Vocci may require you to reopen it.

Beyond Background Mode

Background Mode is the centerpiece of Legato, but this release also improves the moments around that handoff:

  • See the handoff clearly. Sessions appear as the Ring is read, longer recording lists load more reliably, and Device Details estimates how much recording time remains on the Ring.
  • Pick up where you left off. Unsent Vocci AI drafts stay available when you return. Messages that could not be submitted offline remain available to retry and, when possible, continue after the connection returns.
  • Move the conversation into your workflow. From Base, you can move several recordings or files together instead of exporting them one by one. Session Details provides a direct path to audio, while iOS can preview compatible PDF, Word, and Excel files inside the app.
  • Keep connected tools under your control. Connected apps are grouped by category, multiple accounts are listed separately, and each account can be renamed or disconnected on its own. You also choose when Vocci AI should ask before acting.

Where Legato goes next

In Inbox (Beta), we are testing how Vocci can automatically collect the to-dos it identifies across your conversations, so important commitments are less likely to disappear when the conversation ends.

A commitment like “I'll send the deck tomorrow” can become a to-do linked to the exact moment you said it, with a due time, reminder, or tag. For supported tasks, Vocci AI can help with the next step and return the result to the to-do.

Background Mode brings the conversation into Vocci; Inbox turns the follow-ups it finds into an organized next step. Together, they reduce the gap between saying something and making sure it gets done.
