I feel like the internet lets us message thousands of people but we almost never actually talk anymore
Lately I’ve been thinking about how strange online interaction has become.
We have comments, likes, DMs, group chats, endless scrolling, but real conversations with strangers almost never happen anymore.
Typing isn’t really the same as actually talking to someone.
Voice changes things. You can hear tone, pauses, laughter, awkwardness. It feels more human.
So I started building a small website called Whisperly where two random strangers can talk with voice chat (or text if they prefer).
The idea is simple. No followers, no profiles, no pressure to perform. Just two people who happen to meet online and talk.
Some people who tried it told me they actually ended up talking with someone for a long time and even added each other afterwards just to keep chatting. That surprised me because I originally built it mostly out of curiosity.
Of course it’s not perfect. Like any anonymous chat site there are people who misuse it, and moderation is something we’re actively trying to improve.
But when it works, it’s surprisingly nice to just hear another human voice and talk without the usual social media pressure.
I’m honestly curious what kinds of conversations people will end up having there.
If anyone wants to try it or give feedback, the site is whisperly.live.
