There was some program that would impersonate the deputy SysOp, what was it called?

BBS Software

You dialed into a BBS and there was an option to talk to the SysOp. Well, it was all a pack of lies. It talked to you as if it were the SysOp (or the deputy IIRC), and even made mistakes and had to backspace and re-type. But it talked in circles. I was stupid and believed it for a bit, asking it to pass along my messages to the SysOp, but it wasn't the Deputy at all, it was a program. What was this called?

I asked ChatGPT and it said:
"Yes, both "The Major BBS" and "Worldgroup" software had built-in features for creating virtual SysOps and deputy SysOps that users could interact with. These virtual characters could be programmed to respond to specific keywords or phrases, or to follow a pre-determined script, and could give the appearance of conversing with the user in real-time.

The virtual characters could be customized to fit the theme or style of the BBS, and were often used to provide assistance, entertainment, or simply to add a sense of personality to the BBS community. So it's possible that the program you remember was created using one of these software packages, or was a custom-built program that simulated the behavior of a virtual SysOp or deputy SysOp."

Is this accurate?
