What I learned the hard way about place card calligraphy
I used to think place card calligraphy would be the “easy” wedding job. Small cards, short names, quick turnaround. I was wrong. The smaller the surface, the less forgiving it is—one spacing mistake and the whole card looks awkward. I’ve misspelled names, smudged ink at the last second, and underestimated how mentally exhausting writing 200 names in a row can be.
What surprised me most is how meditative it becomes when you stop fighting it. The repetition forces you to slow down. If I’m anxious, my strokes show it immediately. If I breathe and focus, the lines soften.
Technically, testing ink on the actual stock and keeping extra blanks saved me more than once. Also: change your nib more often than you think.
I share some of my finished sets on http://bespokenj.in, but the real learning happened in the messy drafts and ruined stacks.
