Fellow wax nerds — I just dropped 3 new guides on the Candle Math blog and figured I'd share the bite-size version here, because I learned all of this the expensive way.

**1. Cold throw sells the candle. Hot throw earns the repeat.** Customers buy on the sniff before they ever light it. If your cold throw is weak, it's almost always a cure-time problem (you need the full 14 days, no shortcuts). Hot throw weak? It's almost always wick sizing, not fragrance load. Stop adding more oil — you're probably already past the wax's binding limit.

**2. Your "candle cost" is lying to you.** I priced for a 50% margin for two years and was somehow always broke. Turned out I was forgetting: packaging ($0.87/candle), Etsy fees (\~10%), free shipping (a discount you pay yourself), and 5–8% shrinkage from failed pours and pitcher residue. My real margin was 38%, not 50%. Track all four COGS buckets or you're guessing.

**3. Mushrooming, sooting, tunneling — one test fixes all three.** Pour the same recipe in 3 identical jars with 3 different wick sizes. Burn all 3 in a still room for 4 hours. Smallest tunnels, largest mushrooms, middle is usually right. One afternoon = months of single-variable trial-and-error saved.
