if you are in Oregon and want to help re: the fire disaster
(it would be great if someone would gather this specific information for California and Washington state)
About Volunteering in a Disaster Environment in Oregon
Volunteers who sign up through the Oregon Emergency Management system must be willing to work with survivors of all races, genders, orientations, religious affiliations, or nationality/legal status.
If you want to sign up, you must do so through the official Oregon Emergency Management (OEM) web site.
If you are a medical professional, you can sign up to volunteer with SERV-OR at https://serv-or.org
If you are accepted into the roster after filling out the application, you will be contacted by a deployment agency about your availability. Volunteers are typically provided food and water while working; but it is always recommended to bring some food/water which can be stored in a car or a safe place. Volunteers are not reimbursed for travel, gas or lodging. However, some agencies may provide group transportation and/or offer lodging in a staff shelter if multi-day opportunities are required.
The VisionLink Volunteer Manager used by OEM is intended as a way for the general public to support the work of voluntary agencies active in disaster. It allows you to:
- Register to volunteer and be placed in a pool of volunteers which can be accessed by participating agencies who are looking for volunteers.
- Sign Up for Volunteer Opportunities for users not wanting to register yet want to help their community; registered users may also sign up for any open Volunteer Opportunity.
About Your Privacy
When you register, your information is made available to a trusted network of nonprofit agencies who are active in disaster. These are some of the most trusted brand names in the country. You control your data and may choose to opt out at any time. Registered use may also up their profile to manage when and where they are available and may accept or decline any opportunity offered to you.
You will be given a chance to complete a background check. A link will be provided to the organization Verified Volunteers to have your background check completed. There is a cost of $10. If you are not ready to have a background check conducted, you will have the option to do so by logging back into your account and visiting the "Background Check" tab at another time.
Completing a background check helps agencies put you to work sooner—especially if the volunteer opportunities are working directly with individuals in the community or a disaster shelter. After completing the registration, please log back in to review your account.
