Before EIP-1559, Ethereum used a simple auction model — you named a gas price, miners decided whether to accept it. It worked, but fees were unpredictable and often wasteful.
EIP-1559 replaced that with a three-part fee structure that gives you far more visibility into what you're actually paying.
Base Fee is calculated automatically by the network based on block demand. It adjusts up or down with each block, and crucially, it gets burned rather than paid to validators. This makes it a reliable, transparent floor price for getting your transaction included.
Max Fee Per Gas is your ceiling — the absolute maximum you're willing to pay per unit of gas. If the base fee is below your max, you only pay the base fee plus your tip. The difference is refunded.
Max Priority Fee is the tip paid directly to validators. During congestion, a higher tip moves your transaction to the front of the queue. During quiet periods, even a minimal tip is enough.
The result is a system where fees are more predictable, users don't overpay by default, and validators are incentivized without inflating costs unnecessarily.
