First time in 50 years: no skiing in the alps in summer
For the first time in about 50 years, summer skiing operations throughout the Alps will come to a complete halt in August 2026. Following extreme heat waves and a lack of nighttime cooling, even the last remaining open summer ski resort at the Stelvio Pass in South Tyrol was forced to suspend operations on its slopes for the time being. Reasons for the ClosureWeather Conditions:
Prolonged heat waves and severe thunderstorms made it impossible to groom the slopes.
Safety Standards: Since the snow no longer freezes solid overnight, safety standards for skiing could no longer be guaranteed.
Previous Developments: Earlier in the summer, other resorts such as Zermatt and Saas-Fee had already suspended operations on their glaciers.
