Avoiding skin failures

Today I was in the Wasatch Powderkeg and unfortunately DNF'd largely because of multiple skin failures. During the final climb there was a checkpoint you had to reach by 4 hours and I hit it at... 4:08.

The first two climbs were fairly cold and icy, which at first was just annoying but towards the top of the first one my skins began to fail. It got worse in the second climb; my skins failed at least a dozen times and I constantly switched between pairs (I brought two of course). These problems cost me at least 45 min directly (probably more indirectly considering how tiring kick turns on an icy skintrack with failing skins is).

I've already done a lot of the basic things like regluing periodically (which I keep an eye out for a lot as my regimen is basically an exercise in skin abuse with how tiny my local hill is), clean rips during transitions, carrying a spare to keep warm in my suit, etc. I know it's hard to judge without seeing my skins but are there other things I might be overlooking here? Is this more that even with proper care, they just have a shortened life if I'm transitioning this much? I've also considered buying a few pairs to designate as race-only.
