MULIO

The **mulio**, or mule driver, was a vital but often overlooked figure in the Roman army’s logistical chain.  Typically a young civilian or camp follower sometimes the son of a soldier, he was responsible for tending the **mulus**, the mule that carried the **sarcina** of the **contubernium**, the eight-man tent unit.  This included the **papilio** tent, stakes, cooking gear, and days of grain rations.

The mule was fitted with a **pack saddle (stramentum)** and harness, as seen on **Trajan’s Column**, though no direct depictions show mules carrying full contubernium loads.  The mulio did not fight; his role was purely logistical, ensuring the legion’s relentless pace. He wore simple civilian clothing likely a **tunic, Gallic coat (caracca), hooded cape (cucullus)**, and **caligae** and carried a large knife for camp tasks.

While some sources suggest each contubernium had a servant, the evidence for a fixed number is thin. The mulio’s existence reflects Rome’s genius: an army that moved not just on discipline and steel, but on the quiet labor of men and animals who made the legions’ daily camps—and thus their dominance—possible.
