Soret / Oddtales appreciation post
With this game still in development from 2014 and the constant 'when is the game coming out', I want to write a post to explain how this game and the people behind it have affected me over the last few years.
At a university that has a bachelor of computer science that is very subpar, a lot of what I know is self taught.
After seeing the 2017 trailer, I was stunned. With all of what happened to Soret and his tweets immediatly after the reveal, at the time I decided to go through his tweets, not to pick on him like everyone else but to look for more of the game, what I saw was really inspirational. Since then, the twitter posts have been more inpirational.
I live in Australia where stable game dev jobs are very hard to come by. As a result, they all tend to use Unity for the most part to make it easier on developers here. Unity intimidated me for a long time (the university I went to barely teaches C#), I was so intimidated by shader and graphics programming that I never wanted to ever learn them.
After seeing some of what Oddtales can do with Unity and graphics programming, I took Unity, OpenGL and DirectX head on and am comfortable in now them as a result. Years of late nights and leaving actual assignments to the last minute felt great to me because what I was learning was worth it to me.
As well as that, following Soret in particular, I have learnt an interesting amount about art itself. To the point where I hold a whole new perspective on what art is.
Thank you Soret and Oddtales, the game hasn't even come out yet and I attribute it as a fundamental part of a key learning experience I won't forget. Thanks for the push.
