I insulted my ex bestfriend

I (15F) am friends with Maya (15F). My dad left my mom when I was 2 and completely vanished. It's not a secret in our tiny town, but it's not something I talk about much.

I met Maya in 4th grade and we hit it off instantly. Since then, we've been attached at the hip.

A few years ago, Maya's dad was diagnosed with lymphoma stage 3 and was given a year and a half to live. During this time, Maya's mom had to pick up extra shifts to handle rent and medical bills, so Maya was always at our house. She became like another daughter to my mom.

A year went by and Maya's dad died. We grieved, but life moved on.

One day we were in the cafeteria at school and a boy approached us and said, "Hi Maya." She hugged him and said, "Hi Jack, this is Lizzy, the girl I told you about." Jack replied, "The one whose dad went to get milk and never came back?" They laughed and Maya said, "Yeah, the one and only."

I looked Maya dead in the eye and said, "At least my dad is still alive."

She looked shocked and immediately burst into tears Jack called me an asshole and left with her few later my phone was blowing up with texts on how I'm messed up for insulting a dead man I tried explaining but no one was hearing it apparently the story going around was that I'm a bitch I we home and told my mom and she said I over crossed a line and neiby I should apologise to keep the peace I refused and now everyone I know isn't speaking with me bet I don't regret it and still think everyone is overacting
