Portugal Golden Visa (2025): Investment Options, Stay Requirements & Path to Citizenship

Portugal’s Golden Visa (officially the ARI program) remains one of the most popular residency-by-investment options in Europe, especially for non-EU investors looking for mobility, diversification, and a long-term EU foothold.

After legislative changes in late 2023, real estate is no longer a qualifying option. The program now focuses on capital and contribution-based routes, with the most common options being:

  • €500,000 investment fund subscription (Portuguese-regulated funds)
  • €500,000 scientific research contribution
  • €250,000 contribution to arts or national heritage
  • €500,000 company investment with job creation

One of the biggest advantages is the low physical stay requirement — roughly 7 days per year on average — while still offering a clear path to Portuguese citizenship after 5 years, subject to basic language skills (A2), clean criminal record, and maintaining the investment.

According to recent figures, demand remains strong, with Indian nationals consistently among the top Golden Visa applicants, largely due to family reunification benefits (spouse, dependent children, and parents can be included) and access to the Schengen Area.
