I’m not a very social person, but I do like to talk online about model trains. I also talk a lot about mental illness and substance abuse
I have three disabilities: ADHD, Aspergers and Schizoeffective disorder.
I advocate especially for people with severe ADHD. ADHD has a stereotype that underestimated how dangerous it can be. It can be critical for some people to take stimulant meds to avoid suffering erratic behavior, Impulsivity, immaturity, substance abuse and problems with employment.
Aspergers is my least troublesome, it adds an eccentricity to me even when all my medications are on track and I’m healthy. I have narrow interests, and sometimes have also existed in realities that are not quite on the same page as the world. It’s tough to have that but it’s not my worst issue.
Schizoeffective at this point in my life is the most serious. It’s just as bad as ADHD but unlike ADHD, the medications I take just do not fully eradicate the symptoms. Mainly, I suffer from social paranoia so I am reclusive. Past negative experiences in life have set me up to generally avoid meeting new people. This is a type of schizophrenia and I suffer from Avolition which, while somewhat mild compared to some people, truly limits how much I can work a job. I can work 15 to 20 hours per week without burning out. Working at any job which I have access to is pretty uncomfortable, is not consistent with how my mind works, and while I can pull it off, I can’t maintain more than 15-20 hours a week because my mental health will deteriorate, even with the meds I take. I will burn out. Most of this is due to schizoeffective I believe, so while untreated ADHD can pose a serious threat, schizophrenia is ultimately more serious since it doesn’t fully remiss with pills.
