Are backlinks still important in 2026? Here’s what I’m seeing.

I keep seeing people say “backlinks are dead” or “Google only cares about content now.”

From what I’m seeing in 2026… that’s not fully true.

Backlinks still matter. But not in the old way.

Here’s what I’m noticing across projects I’ve worked on:

1️⃣ Authority still moves rankings

When we built 4–5 strong contextual backlinks (real sites, niche relevant), rankings moved faster than just on-page tweaks.

Not 100 links. Just 4–5 good ones.

2️⃣ Relevance > Volume

Random directory links? No impact.
Niche-relevant guest posts? Still working.

Especially when anchor text matches search intent naturally.

3️⃣ Internal linking is underrated

In one audit, we improved rankings just by fixing internal links and topical clusters — without building new backlinks.

Sometimes people blame “lack of backlinks” when the real issue is site structure.

4️⃣ Backlinks amplify good content

If content is weak, backlinks don’t save it anymore.

But if content is strong + search intent aligned + good UX → backlinks act like fuel.

What I’m NOT seeing work:

  • Spammy Fiverr link blasts
  • PBN-style obvious patterns
  • Exact match anchor abuse

Google feels much better at ignoring low-quality links now.

My takeaway:

Backlinks still matter.

But:
Content + Intent + Technical foundation come first.
Backlinks accelerate. They don’t replace fundamentals.

Curious what others are seeing — are backlinks helping your projects this year?
