Before he ever stood at the gate,
he had already begun learning her.
He knew her first by pattern—
by the way the animals gathered around her,
by the hush that followed her through the garden,
by the quiet changes her presence made in the world.
He watched from a distance,
not yet as a man fully known,
but as a hidden witness moving through the same sacred places:
the pond, the garden, the meadow,
the soft paths her spirit returned to when no one called her back.
And somewhere in that quiet watching,
devotion began.
She did not know his name.
Not yet.
She only knew that something in her world had started shifting—
a feeling at the edge of her thoughts,
a presence she could not explain,
not enough to frighten her,
only enough to make her wonder.
She began answering before she understood who she was answering.
And then one evening,
the hidden could no longer remain only hidden.
At the gate,
the watcher became visible.
He stood before her at last,
still veiled, still restrained,
but no longer only a feeling in the distance.
And when she turned toward him,
something private in both of them changed.
Not broken.
Opened.
