\# How Humans Migrated Across the World

The global spread of Homo sapiens was not one migration from Africa to the rest of the planet.

It was a complicated process involving many populations, routes, encounters, and adaptations over tens of thousands of years.

\## Humans originated in Africa

Homo sapiens evolved in Africa roughly 300,000 years ago.

Some populations traveled beyond Africa more than 100,000 years ago, so the familiar statement that humans first left Africa about 60,000 years ago is an oversimplification.

Genetic evidence nevertheless points to a major sustained expansion around 70,000 to 60,000 years ago that contributed most of the ancestry of people living outside Africa today.

\## Following resources and environments

Ancient people were not attempting to “populate the world.”

Populations expanded gradually while searching for food, water, shelter, animals, plants, and suitable environments.

Over many generations, these movements carried Homo sapiens across Asia and Europe.

They encountered other human populations along the way.

Neanderthals already inhabited Europe and western Asia, while Denisovans and other archaic groups lived in parts of Asia.

DNA shows that Homo sapiens interbred with some of these populations.

\## Adapting to new environments

Successful expansion required flexibility.

Humans developed and carried tools, fire-making knowledge, clothing, shelters, hunting strategies, food-processing techniques, and social knowledge.

They eventually occupied environments ranging from tropical coastlines to cold Ice Age landscapes.

Movement into Sahul, the ancient landmass containing Australia and New Guinea, also required water crossings.

This means early populations possessed some form of maritime technology long before recorded history.

\## Reaching the Americas

During the Ice Age, lower sea levels exposed Beringia between northeastern Asia and northwestern North America.

Human populations entered this region and eventually spread into the Americas.

The exact timing and routes remain debated.

Researchers continue to investigate whether early populations primarily moved south through interior routes, along the Pacific coast, or through combinations of different pathways.

\## How do we know?

Scientists reconstruct these migrations using several independent forms of evidence:

Fossils show where ancient people lived.

Archaeological sites reveal tools and behavior.

DNA reveals relationships and ancient population mixing.

Environmental evidence helps reconstruct the landscapes people encountered.

Together, these clues reveal an increasingly complex history.

\## Final takeaway

Human migration was not a straight line on a map.

It was a branching network of movements, encounters, adaptations, and sometimes population disappearances.

Across thousands of generations, Homo sapiens expanded from Africa into an extraordinary range of environments and eventually established communities across almost every major habitable region of Earth.
