Only Starts in Neutral?

Hi, I just bought a 2012 XT250 recently and the guy told me that the bike will only start in neutral, which is a little annoying as I would like to start with the clutch pulled in first gear sometimes. Are all XT250's this way and is there a simple mod I can do to allow for it to start in first with clutch in? Thanks in advance!
