The Endling

Poem

The Endling

by Ælfric

" An endling is the last known individual of a species or subspecies. Once the endling dies, the species becomes extinct." - Endling - Wikipedia

I trek alone throughout this ancient realm

Beneath this cloudy roof in valleys green,

Between the mossy pillars of the gods,

What dusty breaths that bide, what roots that rot?

The hundred generations behind me

Are but a memory I never met;

Their whispers are my calls, their dreams my thoughts

As I, the last of last, trek into the dark.

Notes:

Inspired by Lonesome George and dedicated to all endlings who once roamed this earth.

The first line of the second stanza is not quite iambic pentameter.
