Help with arm triangle please

Technique

What's up all. I've been catching arm triangles a lot. I've watched both the Gordon Ryan and Craig Jones videos and I have no trouble setting them up and holding the position but I can't get my shoulder under their chin.

I do the "jerking off motion" Gordon talks about and get my arm deep inside but my shoulder is still on their face. Ive tried tripoding and slipping down like Craig shows, hopping off to the side and walking downwards, shrugging to get under but I can't get it under. Even in drilling, it's tough to get.

Anybody have any tips? I'd love to be able to finish because I get to it consistently and I can hold it for minutes but end up transitioning to not waste the roll. Thanks all

I spent a few months developing a head and arm choke, earlier this year. Here's the ADCC champ Ffion Davies free video that helped me out the most.

Danahers new wave mount DVD is really good, as well.

This is how I finish my arm triangles. But I've been using them to set up one handed Americanas.

The Way Ffion shows it in the Video is the Style I finish too. When I get the Position I have nearly 100% Finish Rate.

The trick to get your shoulder under the chin is to aim for their armpit with your shoulder. So if you choke with your right arm aim your shoulder for the guys armpit on the other side. This is not possible to do but it will get your shoulder into the correct position for the choke.

Thank you. When I'm trying to shift back like that, their knees are stopping me, any tips for that?

https://youtu.be/YMKhFGgSP7c You can Grapevine like in this video. Then shift back or my favorite is to cross my feet right behind their butt, hip into them while staying low and digging for elbows. Roger and Gordon both use this tactic a lot so I'd say its a reliable go to👊

Neil Melanson has a really good DVD on head and arm chokes, "off with their heads". I think it's really good and shows a little different perspective than Craig and Gordon

Do you actually slap the mat like that? :D

when i have it locked up but it’s not quite tight enough, i’ll open my elbow just a bit and use my free hand to sort of stuff their lat and shove their head and arm tighter into my choking arm. i also don’t drop my hips to the mat, i have a lot more luck trying to stack my weight onto them instead. helps being a bigger guy - 6’ 225ish

Although its generally not adviced, I started by over-doing the dropping motion to their armpit. I would do the setup and then drop my head all the way totheir armpit/rib cage while sagging my shoulder as low as it goes with me. Then I'd start climing back up while staying low with my head.

Now, this does open a defensive avenue if the opponent is smart, but I managed with it until I developed a feel for that shoulder drop without too many holes.

Are you going face to face with them to finish, it's basically chin to cheek? Taking angle to look towards them cinches the choke.

What helps me a lot is dropping my shoulder line and digging under their chin, I like to think about putting my front delt on their sternum, and grinding up like a rolling pin.

Been trying this and can't get under. I understand the concept but just can't lol

Are you jacked? I’ve seen guys with very large biceps have this problem.

Edit: saw you height/weight in a MT thread. You aren’t so big as to have this problem.

My guess is that you are too high. I try to start with my head in their armpit and drive up as I squeeze. This slips the arm under the chin pretty reliably.

The trick is to stuff the shoulder once it's trapped and use your chin and chest to cover that space applying the choke.

Just keep repping it. Eventually it starts to fall into place.
