Beer made strictly from cannabis? No, not really. Alcohol is produced by a process of fermentation which converts sugar into alcohol; THC is a lipid which is why it binds to other lipids like butter. You'd basically be starting off with the wrong molecule.

That's the bad news.

The good news is the cannabis flower is very similar to the hops flower (look at a picture of it, you'll see what I mean) which is present in any beer you've ever had, so it's possible to infuse cannabis into beer the same way you would use hops. I've seen recipes where cannabis is used in lieu or in conjuction with hops to make a 'weed beer', so I know it's been done before.

Great explanation; simple, concise. Appreciated!

Could you use the seeds?

Not for fermenting alcohol or extracting THC. The cannbinoids are only present in the mature plant, mostly in the flower which stops producing THC when it goes to seed, plus the seeds are what you press to make hemp seed oil so it brings you back to the lipid when you need a sugar issue

It's probably not starchy or sugary enough to ferment.

This is the correct answer. However, you can use cannabis to contribute flavor, and you can incorporate cannabis extracts into a brew to make a medicated drink

Does anyone know how they get cannabinoids to dissolve into those drinks? I thought they needed to be dissolved in fats.

THC dissolves in alcohol quite well. It's possible they use that.

You can also dissolve in alcohol, then pour over a carrier substance (like sugar for example) and then evaporate it.

There is also the option of glycerin extracts, which are amazing, but take forever to make.

Some people extract into honey or corn syrup, I've never tried it so i can't say much about that. I make cannasugar and use that in drinks

is there not any way to get the sugar of plant material and add plant material to ferment

Not that i am aware of

Hops and cannabis are actually plant relatives. Hops more or less sorta look like buds without the trichomes and leaf if you look them up. You can distill anything into alcohol, it’s more a question of if it tastes good enough to mass produce. I’ve seen cannabis vodka in Colorado, but was never tempted to try it cus I don’t enjoy the taste of raw cannabis.

I did have a hemp IPA once that wasn’t too bad, but definitely still had a weed taste.

Need fermentable sugars to produce alcohol. In beer the bulk of the sugars are derived from malted barley, wine - grapes, rum - molasses, tequila - agave, etc.

There aren’t really many fermentable sugars in cannabis, the psychoactive compound is derived from the oils of the flower. Oils typically real havoc on head retention and carbonation too.

There are infusion methods, and a lot of people have been experimenting as the cultural attitude towards cannabis has changed tremendously over the last few years.

If you venture down the rabbit hole of experimenting into developing a beer/cannabis hybrid it will likely have an addition of flower at boil, “dry hop stage”, or as an extract addition (green dragon or other liquid thc)

A yeast that claims to ferment cannabis (but with the addition of sugar). This is still kinda prison hooch-esque as you’re not deriving the main fermentables from the plant itself:

There’s certain terpenes that are in both weed and beer.

I dont know about beer, but you can definitely turn cannabis into alcohol. There is a process to convert cannabis to ethanol for fuel, and ethanol is the same thing as alcohol that is used for drinking. It basically like grain alcohol.

that's what I meant how can you simply get sugars from cannabis

Have you tried googling that?

Hops are closely related to mj buds

You can make cannabis infused beer but beer is a drink comprised of specific ingredients like other beverages. Cannabis would have to be an extra ingredient

1
Biotech864•

No. Beer requires grain specifically bred for beer production to produce alcohol. The only use for cannabis in a beer would be for flavoring just like hops. I assume you could produce a carbonated water beverage with some sort of flavoring and cannabis extract to produce a product you are wanting.

I’ve had CBD beer before so there is a crossover

Lagunitas Brewery sells THC infused Hop Water that has a beerish flavour. In California at least it is illegal to sell anything with THC and alcohol.
