Painting sm550

I've got a white sm550 that I want to paint black. Has anyone had any luck doing this, and is there any specific type of spray paint that would work best?

Thinking outside of the box a little bit, it might be worth finding a gun shop nearby. Go in, ask if they can do a cerakote job, or recommend someone who can. I've got a case out right now getting a black box / flight data recorder style treatment.

Did you consider just ordering extra black panels? They are not that expensive. I always underestimate the price of quality paint and the hassle it gives around the house.

I'm in Canada so unfortunately the shipping costs 50% what the panels do, making it a bit pricy

Painter my SM560. Sanded it down with 80 grit to strip off 70% of the power coating, followed up with 200 grit for smoother finish, primed it with a gray primer, hand painted with acrylic and then clear coated with a clear matte clear coat paint. https://i.imgur.com/CyHLnJO.jpg

Painted mine: sanded it, self etching primer, spray paint.

Looks great! You sanded it all the way down to the metal presumably? I'm an absolute amateur when it comes to this

Fairly close to it, IIRC there was still some of the original powder coating but I didn't take off all of it before priming.

What grit of sandpaper would you recommend?

definitely sand it down first. that’s how we go about repainting cases there.

Find a powder coating place. They could powder coat it for less than the cost of buying black panels I’m sure.

Or just scuff it, prime it, rattle can it. Light coats, always easy to add more but getting runs out is tough.
