Using Solar PV electricity to heat home hot water system?
Hi All,
Hope this is the correct subreddit for this question...
I'm currently renovating a house and have decided on a 8kw solar panel setup with 13kwh of battery storage...i'm pretty happy with the solution i'm going for but i have a follow up topic which is how to power the hot water system....(baths/showers/taps etc - not the central heating system)
I'm UK based, but this is more of a technology question.
I'm at the point in the project where i need to select my hot water cylinder and have the options of a direct (electric immersion) or indirect (gas boiler with electric immersion backup).
Now, given I have battery storage I could effectively charge the batteries when it's sunny & heat the hot water when needed using the electric immersion heater....but is this a better cost solution that the more tradition indirect method of using the main house gas boiler to heat the tank.
Energy costs in the uk are (currently) Gas: 10p/kwh & Electricity: 34p/kwh peak & 12.5p/kwh off-peak
Electricity use could be prioritised 1)from my solar, 2) the batteries & then 3) off-peak rate.
It's basically a question of should I ditch gas as hot water heating source in favour of pure electric?
Thanks!
