Wall connector on 30 A dryer circuit?

Energy - Charging

I will need a new electrical panel to get 50 amps, but… I have a 220v 30 amp dryer circuit available about 30 feet from where I want the wall connector. I’m thinking of running flex conduit over there, removing the outlet, and wire nutting in the new wires.

Is this crazy?

Can I use the wall connector at 24 amps?

Can I set it internally to limit to 24?

Yes, mine is on a 30A circuit and charges at 24A.

Thanks. Now I just have to pick out the wire etc.

Do you need the dryer outlet? I just got a Neocharge splitter a couple months ago that let's you use as a charger when not using the dryer.

Nope. Dryer runs on gas. Thanks. I’m going to yank the outlet and put on a cover plate.

Another option is to just extend the dryer outlet over to where you want to charge and use the Mobile Connector with a 30A plug. The plug ends are only $45 and the Mobile Connector is $230 vs the Wall Connector which is $425.

Thanks. I already got the wall connector with the long term in mind. I want it mounted where it’s convenient to just grab and plug in. I know I will do the big swap of the service panel at some point.

OK, in that case, I'll suggest you run wire that can support 60 amps in the new section, that way when you do upgrade to a 60 amp circuit, you only have to change the old section of wire. I would use 6 gauge copper THHN/THWN in the conduit for the two Hot lines and an 8 gauge copper wire for ground.

One caveat, if your dryer outlet is the older 10-30 type, it won't have ground, only the two hots and neutral. If it's a newer 14-50, it will have four pins, because it adds ground. If the outlet is wired back to the main panel and not a sub-panel, then ground and neutral are going to be tied together. You'll want to verify what the case is to see if you can repurpose neutral as ground without running afoul of code.

Thanks. I copied this and will keep it in mind when I open it up.
