US requests that Japan go home and sleep it off before the next count
“And that one is mine! And that one is mine!”
That sake...
Contrary to intuition, the concept of an island isn't well defined. It's like the better known case of the length of any shoreline being somewhat meaningless.
No island is defined. It's any piece of land that is permanently above sea level surrounded by water.
TIL that continents are technically really really really big islands
You aren’t wrong.
Except for Europe and Asia, they have to be combined to make an island.

In this case it has to also have a circumference of 100 meters... which means the coastline paradox strikes again!
No, that's "island". "No island" is the inverse.
Is an offshore wind turbine an island?
Each atom is an island by my definition
And a rock feels no pain.
Just doing a stocktake, now that China and Russia are being dodgey.
Fun fact: China also counts Japan's islands. :V
Now see if they had a broken supreme court system they could have stopped that recount and got however many islands they wanted
They do have a broken legal system, and it wouldn't surprise me if they did. But SCOTUS's interference in the 2000 recount in the States was also silly.
inb4 climate deniers use this as proof the icecaps aren't melting.
more islands would mean more water though, half islands turning into full ones and islands separated by a higher water level into two or more. Not saying the new count is due to extreme rising levels since, semantics play a role.
Not sure how you'd even try spin it as a climate change denying thing.

More islands could mean less water, as previously submerged islands become visible,
I'm going to need a 3Blue1Brown on this
It could be stuff just below the surface being revealed while stuff already above doesn't connect. More total islands showing up than being connected.
More water could make more or less islands. Depending how many islands it divides and how many it completely covers. The same for less water.

You've clearly never seen most of Twitter.
Did they count Indonesia, Midway and Hawaii too?
China: “This aggression won’t stand!”
“We really want that one island… and all those other ones in the South China Sea… and all the oceans are really connected… so we’ll take every island in the world! We’ll start with Ireland and Sardinia this week, and then next week we’ll take Madagascar and Long Island. Sound good?”
Which count is the "social truth" and which is the "actual truth"?
How many of them are actually Godzillas tho?

Something about the headline makes me chuckles
Is this because there are literally more islands or is this like the coastline paradox where the more accurately you measure the perimeter of a coastline the longer it appears to be.
Good job keep counting 😉
Stop the count
Count the islands!
“Look I new you to find me more islands”
