Mouse & Keyboard or Controller?

Question

Hey! I just got my first opportunity to play Returnal with the PC port, and it has been a blast. I initially used an xbox one controller I had lying around because I assumed the game, being originally a ps5 exclusive, would be best played with a controller. Now, as I get a feel for the game, I find myself wishing for the precision and speed of mouse and keyboard, but I really don't want to make the game too easy and just blowing through the experience in a way that the developers didn't really design around. Whats your guy's thoughts?

The haptics on the PS5 controller are the main draw of controller over MK, while MK main draw is the increased precision.

From there it's what is more important to you!

You can also try MK for a bit and see if you like that better or want to switch back.

Idk if it's a mouse and keyboard issue, or the game itself, but it def feels wayyyy easier than what I read in reviews

The game is harder with controller.

Okay

The haptics are really cool and some of the best out there, but this game is so much more rewarding with M/KB setup than trying to aim with analog sticks.

Try both.

Aim and alt-fire being bound to the same button on controller sounds like nonsense to me. You can change it, thankfully.

The dualsense has adaptive triggers. You can actually feel the left trigger get tense the further you pull. It’s actually very intuitive for alt fire since there’s a clear point on it where it’s almost like pressing a second button. For any other controller, I can totally see it being an issue.

KeyBoard and mouse, no question. Everyone is on about the haptic feedback of the PS5 controller, because that's the ONLY thing it can do. If you play with a controller, the game is design to screw you over because you can't dodge+ run+ move camera+ shoot at the same time, which you can with KBM, very easly.

I honestly thing this game only got the "Very difficult" mark on it because controller just physically can't do what kind of combat the game expects, and it seems to be a breeze on PC.

I must admit, I agree the difficulty is exaggerated on PC/MK. While I've only finished act 1, I find the bosses + lockdown rooms tense but manageable, and every other room pretty easy. I was expecting every room to be like the lockdown ones tbh.

That's because the game was designed for controller. That's part of the difficulty. You are actually losing on design by using M&KB. Whenever you run from something you aren't able to see it. Believe me, you lose the uneasy feeling which is a great part of the game.

Translation = Idiotic game design. If the movement / camera controls are bad and the player is able to improve them, obviously they will. If the game was designed to rely on the player not having proper vision and control, then it is designed bad, end of story. Even consoles can have KBMs plugged into them.

Well I wildly disagree with this take. The counter point is the designers designed their difficulty around those limitations. Once those limitations are removed of course the game is easier, but that ruins the desired difficulty.

You just described bad game design. If you develop a game that is specifically designed to handicap you with certain valid hardware options to play it with, you are a shit designer, the end.
