A game with logistics and an economy?

I'm looking for an alternative to Railroad Tycoon 3. One of the great things about that game are optimizing routes to make the most profit, hauling goods around to places with different types of factories, etc. The economics portion of the game is also fun.

I was wondering if there are any games remotely close to this type of gameplay. Thanks!

Ever heard of EVE Online? It seems like that's what you're looking for...

Try a game in the X series. One possible play style is to make profit as an intergalactic trader...and the in-game economy is extremely deep. I would recommend X3: Terran Conflict to you.

Hm.. it's a little bit more hands off, but you still might enjoy Victoria II. It's a grand strategy game with a focus on Industrialization (building factories, building infrastructure, dominating the market, producing goods, etc) and Imperialism. I linked you to a demo, maybe give it a try?

Anno 2070 or if you want to save money Anno 1440. Awesome games if you like deep supply chain games with a small side of war :).

If you want to play this sort of game in hardcore mode, try simutrans. It hasn't good traffics but the level of detail for transportation are amazing. If you get into it, you will spend hours in optimizing your routes and trains. It doesn't have a much detailled economy, though.

Another game in this genre is Cities in Motion. It covers only public transport in a specific city but does a very good job in that. Every citizen is simulated individually, his commute, his life priorities. (An easy way to make lots of money is to make a few buslines to create traffic jams everywhere and then offer a fast alternative with your underground lines)

How about OpenTTD?, It's free, supports mods and is very customizable, although it doesn't have a big community the game is quite fun even solo.

Mount & Blade has this aspect as well.

I was going to bring that up, but it's much more action-oriented than OP is looking for, despite it being not very action-oriented.

That's certainly true.

M and B isn't action oriented? I don't think I've done anything in that game other than kill things and raid villages.

Half the game is in the overhead map. IMO it's less action-oriented than most action games. But yeah, it is somewhat, which is why I said it's not particularly action-oriented.

I marched my troops across that map a thousand times, was ruined and made a dozen, and eventually captured every city and castle in the name of Swadia then erradicated every other faction. It took 300 hours and was worth every seccond.

You can try with transport tycoon, here's the link: http://www.transporttycoon.net/game

It's an awesome game, had fun with it alot, but it's preety old. You just basically transport stuff by building roads, railroad junctions etc. You can also compete with the AI or with others on multiplayer.
