What style of music do you like to listen to while you are in your creative zone?

General Question

Curious what other artists like to listen to while they paint away for hours?

Do you listen to radio (local AM/FM or online), records or CDs, prefer podcasts or just having the television on in the background?

I like mellow shit. Folky music. Lana Del Ray is my favorite for painting, but I have a bunch of stuff that I like. I'm in my 40's, I can't do the harder stuff, I think it takes over, I want music that sticks to the background instead of something thats gonna take over.

Depends on what phase of the art I am at. If I am on a "thinkin' " stage, then I can only listen to instrumental stuff. Lo-Fi, Synthwave and Jazz are perennials. When I am on an "inkin' " stage, I can listen to anything. Currently it is a lot of Japanese City Pop and Elvis Costello. The Rockford Files are like ASMR for me and I can always work to that at the inkin' stage.

I do a little of everything. Sometimes I’ll put on a show/podcast. And sometimes a whole album but for the most part I’ll make playlists of songs that just vibe together. They can be pretty eclectic but it works for me. I tend to like music that sounds cinematic which actually sometimes includes songs from soundtracks.

I feel like I've been the most productive while listening to Synthwave or Dark Ambient.

whatever is on my mind. Usually just put my liked songs on shuffle. My go-to genres are folk-rock(lotte kestner/lord huron), lofi, and indie/soft metal. Background music that occasionally catches you off guard.

Depends on my mood; sometimes I focus better with lofi/chillstep, sometimes it’ll be smooth jazz and other times it’ll be rock or dubstep or pop. TV/movie is too distracting, I tend to tune in and watch but I think I’ll try some podcasts, found myself immensely enjoying a podcast lecture on a recent road trip

I have super eclectic music taste starting with all Beatles, Stones, Queen, Billy Holiday, Patsy Cline, and Latin Salsa, 80's + 90's dance, Prince, Madonna, Eurythmics, and Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins and current rap & pop, NOT current country, hate that! I listen to Podcasts too, mostly Art related or comedy or true crime, and also Audio Books!! I spend A LOT of time listening to something! NO SILENCE!! I need NOISE to be in the Creative Zone!

I listen to nu metal lol.

Or electronica like the Postal Service.

Maybe rain or ambient if I really need to crunch and focus hard.

Pop mostly. I like to listen to Hits 1 on SiriusXM, which is upbeat and also pretty repetitive. This combo works for me.

Otherwise, I like sitcoms I’ve seen a thousand times before (Community, The Office, HIMYM, 30 Rock, Cheers, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Silicon Valley), procedural shows (Bones, House, Psych, CSI), or the trashiest reality TV I can find.

The trick is that it has to be predictable and fairly simple. Otherwise I get too distracted.

I mostly listen to music, the type of music depends on what I am drawing. If I am drawing a specific character or scene then music that applies to said character or scene is what I will listen to.

I either listen music that fits what I’m drawing at the moment or podcasts.

Bluegrass is a favorite but sometimes Karl Jenkins modern classicals like Adeamus can take me to places often inaccessible otherwise.

Television ( I like a narrative) or lofi / chill electronic music

I switch between Lofi, the kinda chill sounding J-Rock (idk what to call it), more intense J-Pop (vocaloid stuff mostly), and podcasts depending on my mood. But when I have podcasts I’ll sometimes have to rewind because I’ll realize I tuned out 30 whole minutes and they talked about something I was interested in.

Usually House genre because of it doesn't have too much information to process. Just follow the beat, groove. If I wanna some boost of energy, maybe Disco with good bassline. But if I wanna do something like composition or doing study/practice I wouldn't play any music. Need to focus on the craft sometimes.

Pencils - classical music, lofi and relaxing stuff so I can concentrate and make pretty lines.

Charcoal - intense driving music so I can get into the flow and attack the paper without over thinking it.
