[2602] Chimeras
Hello everyone,
This is the first chapter of my sci-fi/horror novel CHIMERAS. It is my debut novel, and I plan on querying soon. Please shred it to smithereens. I want to get better. I've only recently discovered this sub but I've already learned a lot from the comments here, so I'm eager to see how you all feel about this chapter.

Blurb:
When all the volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire erupted five years ago, it felt like the world was about to end. In reality, it was just the beginning of a new life for Valentina. A single mother of two who lost everything during the Great Eruptions, she risks her life every day working as a miner at a volcano just to keep her family fed.
Janek's life is quite different. He's the sole, yet reluctant, heir to the multibillion dollar empire that exploits Valentina, and his comfortable life is only threatened when his father brings him to a volcano in California. Shortly after he arrives, mysterious creatures emerge from the lava, killing everyone on sight.
Brought together by chance, Valentina and Janek escape the monsters' initial killing spree, but suffer terrible losses. They will journey together through California, desperate to escape the creatures and to understand the bond that inevitably links them.
FYI, English is not my first language, and the novel is in American English.
