Civic transmission input shaft play

Hello,

I just bought an automatic transmission from a junkyard, and after working on it for a bit I've noticed the input shaft has a very slight movement up, down, left, and right and makes a tapping noise when it touches. I've read that this is normal and should become sturdier once it's mated to the pilot bearing, and I've read that any play whatsoever indicates a bad input shaft bearing. What is the truth of the matter?

Generally the torque converter nose and the oil pump centralise everything. usually you can move the torque converter up and down a little once it's installed indicating a small amount of play in the input shaft.

MAKE SURE you line up your oil pump... youtube vids will help you there.

Thank you for the reply. I've been doing some reading about the oil pump alignment, and I realized I may have done things incorrectly the first time. I didn't realize the torque converter needs to be installed onto the transmission before being mated to the engine. I left the torque converter on the engine and installed the original transmission that way, and it may have caused the issue I ran into where I was unable to turn the engine over with a ratchet with the transmission attached. Is that a symptom of a misaligned oil pump, and not a seized transmission as I suspected?

more likely a crushed oil pump within the transmission from the torque converter not lining up onto the transmission oil pump, sorry to say mate, but you did that.

Damn, that sucks. At least I've got a second one to work with, and knowledge not to screw it up. Appreciate the info!
