How to be social

Advice/Help

Ok. So sometimes I want to be kind of social. But everyone I know are church members and I’ve been avoiding church for mental health reasons and religious trauma. Im a single mom. Live in Utah. And if I weren’t a mom I can think of tons of things I could participate in that are not Mormon centered, but since I am a mom and where I’m always with my kids, and I don’t know anyone outside of the church and am totally surrounded by only church members. How can I meet people? Also every time that I go even to a park with the kids, church comes up. And ppl wanting to share the gospel. It’s like the only thing anyone can talk about. Any suggestions for me?

This might sound like a weird one but our library has kind of filled a bit of the social hole we felt after leaving. They have all sorts of stuff for families/adults/teens/kids and you start to see the same people at specific stuff. We've met some good people.

I know this may not be helpful, our kids are a little older so we felt okay leaving them for a couple hours but we met a lot of people in our neighborhood when someone organized a "yard bar crawl" during the summer. They just asked who would be interested on our neighborhood Facebook page and then every other week one or two houses would serve drinks in their front or back yard. Another awesome neighbor does a yoga class at our neighborhood park on Sunday mornings when the weather is nice and obviously everyone there was not Mormon. Maybe you could do or find something like that to find your people.

I second the library!! My kids are little so we are always looking for ways to stay busy.

Oh hey I could maybe start a yoga class even bc I’ll be finished with my certification soon. The library idea is great too! Thanks for the good suggestions :)

Yeah, hanging out with people that read more than one book is helpful.
