Feliciano Lopez begins his farewell season with a 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Christopher Eubanks. This is his first main draw singles victory since July 2021

Post-Match Thread

Let's go Feli Lopez! 504th career victory. At the tournament where he won the doubles event last year, his last title run. Not much to say he's gonna have many more if any more match wins, but here's hoping. Gotta enjoy this one, a great start to his last season at 41 years old, turning 42 later in the year. It's a fantastic start for him to the season.

Always a fun name to have around, great longevity and such a unique style of play and great personality. glad Acapulco gave him the WC. hope other tourneys follow suit, dude is a fun draw for any tournament and was a big name for the last 20 years. Glad he's still competing with his fun game style and winning at that !! Let's go Feli!

You just knew Lopez was winning the second that guy made the reddit post complaining about the wildcard šŸ˜‚

I kinda want to see him win the title now, just out of spite.

I did not complain; I made an observation and provided stats. I wanted Lopez to win! I wish him well versus Tiafoe.

Losing to a 41 yo has to be a bit demoralizing

Well done Feli! I started watching the match as I wanted to savour his last singles performances but sadly the footage wasn’t the best, the camera seemed too far out. A shame they didn’t put him on the centre court. Very glad he at least gets a R1 victory.

King shit. Way to stick it to the guy complaining about Feli getting a wildcard

I'm glad to see him get the win. He's adding to a long and distinguished career. I know it's 504 match wins, but I think they mentioned almost 1000 matches played, which is incredible. He is the Cal Ripken Jr. of tennis with a long streak of tournament play without missing time from injury.

Where are all those people who were saying Feli had no chance and complaining about his WC yesterday lol

I encourage anyone who cares about Deliciano and his path to retirement this year to read this interview he did a few days ago with Marca. He goes into a bit of detail about why his 2022 was such a disaster and how small dips in motivation led to his injuries, which chipped away even further at his motivation, and that led to an unending loop. He's definitely physically better now and I think today's match was a manifestation of the work he put in to make sure his 2023 started out better.

Really, really sad for Eubanks though. It was a very shocking effort from him. He led 5-4, 40-0 on Feli's serve in the first set and lost his way completely from there. A bit worrying when you think about how he ended 2022 really well on the challenger tour.

My Spanish is rusty, is there an English translation? I would love to read it

Not wanting to be snarky but you must be aware of the fact that there are translation services available on the internet?

When I opened it via mobile it didn’t offer to translate and I don’t have high expectations that copying/pasting the text into google translate would capture the feeling of the interview well. I might be wrong though

That's a great interview! And I hope he and Tsitsipas can play doubles a couple more times before the retirement.

Wow, really didn’t see that one coming… he had only one win in over a year, in the qualifying round of the Queen’s. Everywhere else he’s been getting his ass kicked, including in some challengers… I really thought he was not even in shape. I guess imminent retirement gives players a motivation boost (see Tsonga and Simon last year)

Vamos Feli!

He's the last one of an era (most aesthically pleasing to watch era I may add)

IntoThePeople.•

He should've gotten a WC at the Aussie Open as well. Hopefully he gets one for the other 3 Slams. Respect the longevity.

5
raviddosov•

There's only a certain amount of WCs to give away why would they give him one for a grand slam. They're for locals or big drawers

7
IntoThePeople.•

Because he’s the world record holder for 79 consecutive Grand Slam appearances over 21 years. That’s an incredible record and worthy of a farewell tour. If they can’t spare one wildcard per tournament for his last year after that level of consistency then that’s incredibly disappointing.

raviddosov•

well if he can't do it on his merits then does he deserve it

Will be sad to see him go

Dang. Great win. Chris has been playing a lot.

He was a 4/1 underdog

A 41 year old underdog.

Eubanks is no better than someone like Galan or Varillas and yet he doesn't get called a "hard court scrub"

2
trakavica•

Eubanks is a much worse tennis player than Galan or Varillas overall. Galan is 2-1 h2h vs him on hard.

Everytime I watch Eubanks play it makes me want to pull my hair out. He has talent, but he just makes so many brain dead errors and decisions. Not every ball needs to be hammered
