Chris Weidman: "Anderson Silva Is Ducking Me"

Anybody who thinks he is a true number one contender is delusional. Beat Tim Boetsch, then Michael Bisping... and then we'll talk. Right now you're a nobody with a win over a current welterweight contender and a fat Mark Munoz. Also, your nice-guy Matt Serra personality isn't exactly Chael's -- that ain't gonna get you the fight.

ialsolovebees•

Muñoz was the #3 MW when he beat him, Sonnen was #2. Now that Sonnen has moved up, and Weidman has taken Muñoz' place, why should Weidman have to fight Boetsch or Bisping to get a title shot?

Weidman has beaten as many Top 5 opponents as Boetsch (1) and more than Bisping (0).

4
valetodo•

Muñoz was the #3 MW

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

And look how much those rankings mean. A loss to the borderline #1 contender puts him outside the "consensus" top 5. Stann, Bisping, Silva, Weidman, Sonnen, Okami, Belcher, Shields, Souza, Rockhold, & even Kennedy are all better fighters than Munoz.

2
rugbysuperstar•

I dunno even at that time id have put at least yushin and vitor ahead of him.

They are fighting at UFC 155, according to reports.

5
basrootingUnited States•

If the reports are correct he needs to shut the fuck up and focus on the task at hand instead of calling out the champ for ducking him before he has won his next fight:

http://mmajunkie.com/news/30543/chris-weidman-vs-tim-boetsch-slated-for-ufc-155-in-las-vegas.mma

Edit for Clarity:

Silva v. Sonnen 2 July 7, 2012 Silva v. Bonnar October 13, 2012 (took on short notice to save the card) Weidman v. Munoz July 11, 2012 Weidman v. Boetsch December 29, 2012

If you look at the time line that's hard to say he is dodging Weidman. Fight and earn your shot already. Your no Chael P. Sonnen.

5
euthanatos•

You don't think he gets extra points for beating Maia on very short notice and then absolutely destroying Munoz (who was #3 at the time)? He looked better in the Munoz fight than Bisping or Boetsch have ever looked in their careers.

2
andnowme•

Anybody who thinks he is a true number one contender is delusional.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

In his last two fights, Weidman has a win over #3 ranked Mark Munoz and #6 ranked Demian Maia. Bisping only has one top-ten win ever (Stann at #10), and Boetsch has only one top-ten win ever (Okami at #3). Weidman is also undefeated and on a 9 fight win streak.

Obviously, Weidman's claim to the #1 contender spot is stronger than Boetsch's and Bisping's (who are definitively the next 2 in line after Weidman). So how is Weidman not the true #1 contender?

For even more proof, compare Weidman's roster to that of the middleweight title challengers of the past:

  • Okami was on a 3 fight win streak with only one opponent being ranked in the top-ten (#3 ranked Marquardt)

  • Belfort was on a 5 fight win streak with zero opponents being ranked in the top-ten.

  • Demian Maia was on a 1 fight win streak over an opponent not ranked in the top-ten.

  • Thales Leites was on a 5 fight win streak with only one opponent beng ranked in the top-10 (#4 ranked Marquardt)

  • Patrick Cote was on a 5 fight win streak with zero opponents being ranked in the top-ten.

  • Dan Henderson got his title shot coming off a loss.

  • Nate Marquardt was on a 6 fight win streak with zero opponents being ranked in the top-ten.

  • Travis Lutter was on a 3 fight win streak with zero opponents being ranked in the top-ten.

So what have we learned? We have learned that not only is Weidman the legitimate #1 contender, but he is one of the two most legitimate #1 contenders ever in Silva's reign (the other being Chael Sonnen at UFC 117, who was only on a 3 fight win streak, but had wins over the #2 and #3).

We have also learned to think before we type.

Anderson Silva is playing by a different set of rules than any champion in UFC history. He is too talented, too big of a draw with too few fights left to waste anymore of them on nameless foes. He's too important to building both the UFC brand and awareness when it comes to what MMA can be. He has to be involved in big event superfights, and that's more so because it's good for the UFC than good for him. Chris Weidman is a freaking nobody to 99.9% of the world. He won't sell PPVs and hasn't really done anything to show most of us he is the fighter who can dethrone the greatest fighter in MMA history. That fight with Maia was sloppy, and Maia had no business being in the ring with Anderson either, really.

He's too important to building both the UFC brand and awareness

that's more so because it's good for the UFC than good for him

Chris Weidman is a freaking nobody to 99.9% of the world. He won't sell PPVs

I see we are on opposite sides of the "Sport vs. Entertainment" argument.

It shouldn't matter what's better for the UFC or what sells PPVs. This is supposed to be a sport. The NFL doesn't get to choose the two most exciting/popular teams to play in the superbowl. If the Seahawks win the NFC championship game, the NFL isn't going to say, "I know you're supposed to play the Patriots in the superbowl, but we're going to have the Patriots play the Giants instead, because it's a big rematch/rivalry, and is surely to bring in more viewers and money. Maybe you'll get a shot at the Patriots next year." That's BS.

Making choices for the good of Dana's pocketbook undermines the integrity of the sport. Just look at the Jones vs. Sonnen debacle. The UFC put a fight together for the sake of the views and the money. It makes no sense from a sporting perspective, and most astute fans are rightfully outraged. This Ben Fowlkes article may help you understand.

And even with all that said, it's irrelevant to our discussion. Your post that I responded to didn't say, "Okay, Weidman is rightfully the #1 contender, BUT I want Anderson in superfights anyway." Your post said that Weidman actually does not deserve to be the #1 contender, and that anyone who thinks so is delusional. And I demonstrated objectively why you couldn't be more wrong.

1
ivan-a-tena•

But weidman doesnt deserve it. Hes had like 10 fights in his career and doesnt have the skill to beat silva.

1
abacus78•

No, I also don't think he is the No. 1 contender. He'd lose to Bisping, IMO. He might lose to Boestch. Belfort would likely beat him, too. Possibly even Belcher. I flat out just don't get the hype. I have watched all his UFC fights and don't see a phenom, but instead of phantom dreamed up by Silva haters.

1
chitibang•

I agree weidman is the Current best pick for #1, but with the GSP fight and maybe jones fight helping The UFC get more recognition in casual fans, I say have weidman beat Tim and if there's still no time beat bisping and give silva his final title fight before retiring.

1
villagejesterZambia•

A welterweight contender that has faught for the Middleweight belt and agrueably the best BJJ in the UFC on very short notice after cutting huge weight.... what a bum eh.

-6
DragonJuggs•

Maia was generously given the title shot because no one else better was available. He also got clowned by the champ in that fight.

Maia also stopped using his greatest asset (bjj) in his fights at MW and started to think he could box his way to a win. Only recently at WW did he go back to his strong bjj to finish fights.

4
abacus78•

Maia isn't a bum, but Weidman is acting like he just beat Royce Gracie and Dan Henderson in their primes. Maia also is obviously a better fighter at 170,.

2
vittuterminaattori•

Beating Maia > beating 'PRIME ROYCE'.

1
[deleted]•

Please shut the fuck up. "Took a lot of risk in my career...". YOU HAVE 9 FIGHTS. When you fight Anderson, and it will happen eventually, hes going to murder you just like everyone else.

20
OmicronPersei8•

Silva won't fight any of us, he's obviously scared of us!

19
JaxRiens•

I know i offered the UFC to fight silva. He hadn't even heard of me.

6
aGeordieEngland•

I tweeted Dana and told him I'd fight Silva AND Jones at 151 with a hand tied behind my back.

Didn't get back to me... pussies.

1
JaxRiens•

I even offered to coach against roy nelson. Said i'd actually coach instead of just watch my coaches do my job.

0
Nunapa•

Weidman should just wait until Silva retires and try to get that belt, otherwise he's just gonna get sent to the back of the line if they do fight.

9
Chris-TUnited States•

Yea he needs to learn a lesson from Cheal! You go right to the back of a very very short line!

2
aquanutz•

AS is ducking me too, that coward. I tweeted at him like 3 times to fight me, still no response.

9
shutaroOP•

Three times?!?! I'm shocked Dana hasn't given you a shot, yet!

1
supervin•

Aquanutz no hespect nothing.

5
vanguard_anonCarries a mouthguard in his pocket everyday just in case•

I have more twitter followers than Stephan Bonner. I called him out and he's still dodging me! (Hopefully, he continues to do so)

3
fancyrandy•

jeez...this kid is getting really annoying. he should be taking as many fights as he can get to prove he's ready for silva.

7
villagejesterZambia•

He has been he jumped in against Maia and had to cut some serious weight to even make that fight.

2
CATCEPT1ON•

I understand he beat Maia and Munoz but really; how do those two stack up to anderson silva? Anderson isn't ducking him, just giving him time and I believe he should take it. Weidman doesn't fully understand just how dangerous Silva is.

11
fancyrandy•

i guess i don't think that earns you a title shot...but you're right, good on him...and i guess the UFC doesn't really have criteria for a title shot.

0
[deleted]•

think of this: Chris Weidman has less fights than Anderson Silva has UFC title defenses... think about that for a minute... now go drink your milkshake kid.

6
Coolbla•

That awkward moment when Anderson Silva TKO's Weidman in the first round.

3
noogerCanada•

I think Weidman is promising, but I'd like to see him against another top 5 MW before getting a shot at Anderson. Giving him Anderson now will do no hype for the fight (his win over Munoz is out of the minds of the casual fans at this point).

Weidman vs Bisping for #1 Contender makes sense to me or Weidman vs Winner of Franklin v. Cung Le.

2

God not cung le or rich. Both are junk. They are probably #6 & 7 at MW

-1
Laughin_Grass•

Did you just say that cung le and rich Franklin are "junk" and then just say they're number 6 or 7 in the MW rankings... And someone actually upvoted you?

Seriously now?

1 Cung Le is NOT the 6 or 7 ranked MW in UFC MW roster... If he is then Wandy has to be ranked higher than that and that's not happening.

2 how in the world is being the 6 or 7th ranked guy in your division in the UFC considered "junk"?

3 you've forgotten about Bisping, Weidman, Boetsch, Lombard, Munoz, Shields, Belcher, "Paul Harris", and Okami. All of these guys would stand a very VERY good chance at beating Cung Le and Rich Franklin.

5
tambricoUnited States•

Neither of them are that highly ranked and neither of them are junk.

Shut up, we want Silva vs JJ.

2
kamakaro•

Abacus has right on the money. This self entitled brat needs to beat Allen, bisping then he can call out the champ.

1
cubreport•

I hope Boetsch continues his trend of winning fights he's not "supposed to" and blasts Weidman back to the drawing board.

I get what Weidman is trying to do, and I didn't mind it when he was calling Anderson out for ducking him during the summer when they were trying to figure out who would get the next shot. At this point, with another fight lined up it seems almost disrespectful to Anderson and Boetsch that this is all he can talk about.

The greatest fighter of all time is ducking you because he doesn't think your 9-0 record is impressive? If he genuinely believes that then he must think he is already the greatest there is ability wise. I'm not buying.

1
TheMeatballOfficial Naysayer•

I have to say, if Boetsch made 3 huge underdogs wins in a row it would be amazing. Weidman is really annoying with his constant calls for a title shot when he already has a fight scheduled and Anderson just fought.

His record is not impressive. He has some impressive wins, but his record is only 9 fights long, with 4 of those being in a local promotion against "nobodies".

5
timetosleep•

Chris Weidman is annoying but I think he has what it takes to beat Spider. I would rather see him fight Bisping than Boetsch. Another strong performance from Weidman should help him make his case.

1
Tommy2Gunz•

Can we get a Video that works in Canada?

1
ivan-a-tena•

This would be like giving jon jones jose aldo.

1
locke21•

I'm tired of hearing him talk about this. If he keeps winning he'll get a shot. Anderson's only "ducking" this fight because Weidman's not worth his time.

1
tastylumpkin•

TIL: Chris Weidman is the #1 MW contender...

wait...
