[PC][2000-2005ish] Top down simple strategy game with grid, cartooney style
Genre: Strategy
Estimated year of release: 2000-2005 EDIT: actually this might have been just pre-millenium. It's really hard to say, I barely remember it!
Graphics/art style: cartoon style with each faction having a simple color to differentiate them. Reminiscent of a flash game but I don't think it was flash based.
Notable characters: NA
Notable gameplay mechanics: Simple, top down grid strategy game. Grid was square aligned and not isometric/diagonal. May have been turn based. Individual units fought on the same grid, there was no separate battlemap. Think older civ game style but even more basic.
I never got to play the full version, but I think the gameplay was based on capturing cities which generated a fixed income and you would choose what units to build and send out. This part is fuzzy though.
Had fog of war.
I THINK it only had three units: tanks, planes, infantry.
Other details: this game also had a screensaver version where the AI would just play.
I thought it was "TinyWarz" but the results I get are not it.
This game was NOT an MMO. Unsure if it even supported multiplayer.
The shareware version let you play out to maybe a hundred turns?
PS: it is not advance wars. This was a PC game and was pretty obscure. As said the one very notable thing was the screensaver version where just AI would play.

Mother of all battles?

That's not it, but that took me down a rabbit hole.
Apparently there are a lot of these style games based on the game "Empire" and another one called "Strategic Conquest". The one I am thinking of is definitely in this vein of games, and even if I don't find it specifically, I now have plenty to toy with.
The one I am thinking of has sprites that could turn different directions. No animations though.
