I purchased Distant Worlds yesterday, is there anything I should know before jumping into the deep end?
I picked this game up yesterday in no small part to a post bryanhbell made in r/4Xgaming the other day and while I've only played the tutorials I like what I see.
While I've started this thread under the guise of wanting some advice suitable for a player brand new to this game but not inexperience to 4X games such as Civ, GalCiv, Total War, and The Paradox Suite (as I like to refer to those games), I also wanted to introduce myself and say hi to this small and relatively new subreddit.
So… hi! and how horribly am I going to be murdered in my first few games?

This is not like other 4x games.
Some quickies:
Read some of the previous posts in here, go to the DW forum proper and read some stuff there. Resources are important and on a first-come-first-serve basis early on Play with ship design, arm your mining bases You always want 2x the number of troops they have when invading a planet.
^ This.
Also destroy or pacify the pirates via paying protection money or utterly destroy them, otherwise they will harass you nonstop and delay your resources and trade routes.
