How would you drain this area?

This is exactly how I got a part of our lawn to drain. Just a small gravel trench along the fenceline. It also provided gap to stop water draining in from the bed/ driveway on the other side of the fence. Definitely helped the grass survive all that rain we had this summer.

Glad to hear a gravel trench alone might do the job!

That’s what I would do as long as there is somewhere for it to drain to

A gravel trap will definitely help but a sand bed laid a few centimetres further down will help even more

Would you put the sand bed below the trees or the drain? What would it do?

In reference to the above comment about the gravel (which I agree with) I was suggesting digging in a bed of sand below the gravel, but you don’t need to dig it into the whole garden. Sand is very free draining.

That is helpful, thanks! Would you put the sand inside the geotextile sausage under the gravel, or underneath it the whole thing?

Pull back bark, lower the ground by 50mm then put back bark, just make sure it has somewhere to go

I have a swampy section, the whole thing. Couldn't afford drains, and how do you do the whole thing? It's always swampy, not just this recent stuff.

I planted Virurnum as my hedge and it doesn't care. Neither does the roses, herbs, some of the hebes (One, my fav did sadly).

I just look for plants that tolerate it now and the food plants are all in raised beds or pots

Planting something tolerant of a wet clay loam is a really good idea! If I can't get the native pittosporums to grow I might have to look into virurnums.

Sorry, typo. Viburnum.

Simple french drain - V trench dug 100mm deep, line with landscaping fabric, put 65mm novacoil (covered in filter sock) in the bottom and fill with drainage rock. You of course need somewhere that the water can go to.

Do you think I could get away without the novacoil?

you can buy 80mm down pipe cheap enough and cut slots with an angle grinder

Definitely open to DIYing holes in a cheap pipe! Will look at the 80mm pvc.

I’d probably suggest a drain
