I personally use the Aruba IAP-3xx series. They all are self-managed. House has three IAP-305H.
Eventually putting a 375 in the back yard (overkill but i don't care)

Highly recommended! At home I have two 335's, awesome AP's. Once you use those, you will never use a consumer grade junk AP again, IMHO
Excellent OS, excellent build quality.
It just spent a week and FINALLY got my Asus AC86U to utilize VLANs on the guest network interfaces. It was a massive PITA so going to switch in the near future. Sounds like Aruba will fit my bill! Thanks

Are you using PoE on the IAP-305 units?
Yes - PoE+ switch in the house here. Midspan and AC power over at my parents' house. Slick as snot.
Depends on what you call reasonably priced, but I've enjoyed Ruckus APs.
You flash / buy them with Ruckus Unleashed and they don't need a WLC.
You can still mesh them though... I have 2x R510s (I think... not near them at the mo) at home, and they're rock solid.
VLANs with different SSIDs for IoT, Guest and our wifi all works great.
Unifi ap or tplink omada
r/HomeNetworking this isnt a pfsense question
TP Link Omada eap225.
I have three Cisco 2702e access points. They are a giant pain in the ass to configure, but they have rock solid reliability.
But I used to be a network engineer, so ymmv.
If it’s only one AP then the Ubiquiti UAP AC Pro is 11ac and you run the controller, set it up and forget about it. You only need the controller to do roaming and neat handoffs.
As an initial step, you might see if your Asus router can be flashed with openwrt. That would unlock a ton of functionality and you’ve already got the hardware.
Nope they are both hnd models so locked firmware that openwrt and freshtomato don't support :(
Bummer
Please post requests like to r/HomeNetworking. Posts that are not directly about the pfSense software likely have better places to be posted.
Ubiquiti.
I'm pretty sure that feature requires the controller unless the smart phone app got a significant overhaul.
You can install the software on any computer, it does not require a hardware controller.
