Vaes Dothrak: Where Whores Go (Spoilers Extended)

An often discussed future plot point for the series is if we will ever see Tyrion's first wife Tysha again. Numerous theories exist as to what exactly happened to her. Some good, some bad and some okay (for instance, I theorized here that she fled to Braavos with the "drunken septon" who married them). But in this post, I wanted to explore something that I had never considered before. That Tysha is in Vaes Dothrak.

I got the idea for this post from u/AdaptiveSpring's post the other day: Did anyone notice the Pretty Young Woman selling Lannisport wares in Vaes Dothrak?

Background

Since GRRM has confirmed (17:50 in the video), we would find out where whores go combined with a few other things make this a possibility.

The Pretty Young Lannisport Woman

Way back in AGoT, Daenerys sees a pretty young woman selling items from Lannisport in Vaes Dothrak:

As Irri and Jhiqui helped her from her litter, she sniffed, and recognized the sharp odors of garlic and pepper, scents that reminded Dany of days long gone in the alleys of Tyrosh and Myr and brought a fond smile to her face. Under that she smelled the heady sweet perfumes of Lys. She saw slaves carrying bolts of intricate Myrish lace and fine wools in a dozen rich colors. Caravan guards wandered among the aisles in copper helmets and knee-length tunics of quilted yellow cotton, empty scabbards swinging from their woven leather belts. Behind one stall an armorer displayed steel breastplates worked with gold and silver in ornate patterns, and helms hammered in the shapes of fanciful beasts. Next to him was a pretty young woman selling Lannisport goldwork, rings and brooches and torcs and exquisitely wrought medallions suitable for belting. A huge eunuch guarded her stall, mute and hairless, dressed in sweat-stained velvets and scowling at anyone who came close. Across the aisle, a fat cloth trader from Yi Ti was haggling with a Pentoshi over the price of some green dye, the monkey tail on his hat swaying back and forth as he shook his head. -AGOT, Daenerys VI

and while we know very little about Tysha, we do know that:

She was scarcely a year older than I was, dark-haired, slender, with a face that would break your heart. It certainly broke mine. Lowborn, half-starved, unwashed ... yet lovely.

  • Tyrion thinks she is beautiful
  • She would be about 27/28 years old
  • She is a commoner from the Westerlands

How would she have gotten there?

Its been about 13 years since the atrocities committed on her so timing is no issue. And while Tyrion doesn't remember how many exactly, she sadly likely had plenty of silver/gold:

A light wind was riffling the waters of the pool below, all around the naked swordsman. It reminded him of how Tysha would riffle his hair during the false spring of their marriage, before he helped his father's guardsmen rape her. He had been thinking of those guardsmen during his flight, trying to recall how many there had been. You would think he might remember that, but no. A dozen? A score? A hundred? He could not say. They had all been grown men, tall and strong … though all men were tall to a dwarf of thirteen years. Tysha knew their number. Each of them had given her a silver stag, so she would only need to count the coins. A silver for each and a gold for me. His father had insisted that he pay her too. A Lannister always pays his debts. -ADWD, Tyrion I

It also should be noted:

The caravans made their way to Vaes Dothrak from east and west not so much to sell to the Dothraki as to trade with each other, Ser Jorah had explained. The riders let them come and go unmolested, so long as they observed the peace of the sacred city, did not profane the Mother of Mountains or the Womb of the World, and honored the crones of the dosh khaleen with the traditional gifts of salt, silver, and seed. -AGOT, Daenerys VI

Tywin

GRRM had been setting up the "Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold" from the very beginning and while its not a direct correlation, I think it somewhat flows with this plotline as one of the last things Tywin states is the line:

"Shall we find out? It's a short word, and it seems to come so easily to your lips." Tyrion gestured impatiently with the bow. "Tysha. What did you do with her, after my little lesson?"

"I don't recall."

"Try harder. Did you have her killed?"

His father pursed his lips. "There was no reason for that, she'd learned her place . . . and had been well paid for her day's work, I seem to recall. I suppose the steward sent her on her way. I never thought to inquire."

"On her way where?"

"Wherever whores go." -ASOS, Tyrion XI

And while Tywin is a true POS and hypocrite (if interested: The Bastard Sons of Tywin Lannister) this line also gives the reader the knowledge that Tysha survived but sadly I could find zero info on the unnamed steward who may have "sent her on her way".

Tyrion's ADWD Plotline

Tyrion's plotline in ADWD is dark/depressing as he deals with killing his father, sadness/anger toward his brother, thoughts of raping/killing his sister, etc. but throughout it we see this plotline building. For example:

Sleep had never come easily to Tyrion Lannister. Aboard that ship it seldom came at all, though from time to time he managed to drink sufficient wine to pass out for a while. At least he did not dream. He had dreamed enough for one small life. And of such follies: love, justice, friendship, glory. As well dream of being tall. It was all beyond his reach, Tyrion knew now. But he did not know where whores go.

"Wherever whores go," his father had said. His last words, and what words they were. The crossbow thrummed, Lord Tywin sat back down, and Tyrion Lannister found himself waddling through the darkness with Varys at his side. He must have clambered back down the shaft, two hundred and thirty rungs to where orange embers glowed in the mouth of an iron dragon. He remembered none of it. Only the sound the crossbow made, and the stink of his father's bowels opening. Even in his dying, he found a way to shit on me. -ADWD, Tyrion I

and:

"Stay that way. Love is madness, and lust is poison. Keep your maidenhead. You'll be happier for it, and you're less like to find yourself in some dingy brothel on the Rhoyne with a whore who looks a bit like your lost love." Or chasing across half the world, hoping to find wherever whores go. "Ser Jorah dreams of rescuing his dragon queen and basking in her gratitude, but I know a thing or two about the gratitude of kings, and I'd sooner have a palace in Valyria." He broke off suddenly. "Did you feel that? The ship moved." -ADWD, Tyrion IX

There are about 8-10 more quotes like this that I am leaving out to save space.

How Could This Come Together?

If interested: GRRM: "Back with Tyrion" in TWoW

Tyrion is currently in Slaver's Bay for the Battle of Fire and Daenerys is currently "going foward to go back". We also know that while GRRM has stated that Tyrion/Dany's plotline's in TWoW will intersect, they spend most of the book apart.

While many think that Dany arriving will be the Deus ex Machina for the Battle of Fire, its something I completely disagree with. Its unneeded/unnecessary as not only is the Slaver Alliance completely inept, but the Ironborn arriving is seemingly the tide turner (we also have the whole dragonhorn plot).

The real issue would arise after the battle when the power vacuum created by Dany's absence, the different goals of the different factions of her supporters and the wildcards that is a character or two claiming a dragon.

We know that there are already search parties out there for Dany:

Aggo and Rakharo and the rest of the queen's khalasar had been dispatched across the river to search for their lost queen. -ADWD, The Queensguard

and:

Her bloodriders have been dispatched across the Skahazadhan to find Her Grace and return her to her loving lord and loyal subjects. Each has ten picked riders, and each man has three swift horses, so they may travel fast and far. Queen Daenerys shall be found." -ADWD, The Discarded Knight

and:

Missandei nodded. It was hard to tell if she was reassured. "Do you think that they will find her, ser? The grasslands are so vast, and dragons leave no tracks across the sky."
"Aggo and Rakharo are blood of her blood … and who knows the Dothraki sea better than Dothraki?" He squeezed her shoulder. "They will find her if she can be found." If she still lives. There were other khals who prowled the grass, horselords with khalasars whose riders numbered in the tens of thousands. But the girl did not need to hear that. "You love her well, I know. I swear, I shall keep her safe." -ADWD, The Queensguard

A Potential Theory

Brown Ben Plumm (two drops of dragon blood) claims a dragon after the Battle of Fire and takes Tyrion with him searching for Dany (remember that the Second Sons have switched sides again) and when they reach Vaes Dothrak, Tyrion runs into Tysha.

Issues with this Theory

  • How does Tysha continue to get items from Lannisport to sell?
  • While GRRM has said that Tyrion/Dany spend much of TWoW apart, having them both stuck in Vaes Dothrak for most of the book would be terrible logistically/timing wise
  • While I do think we should ignore dragon size due to the abandonment of the 5 year gap, is Viserion really big enough to carry both Brown Ben and Tyrion?
  • The whole buddy cop Jorah/Daario both in love with Dany search on the show probably won't happen but while I mentioned him riding viserion with Brown Ben, one thing the show brings up is that taking a dwarf on search party probably isn't the best idea

TLDR: If Tysha is the pretty young woman selling Lannisport items in Vaes Dothrak, one way Tyrion could meet her is if he helps search for Dany and arrives there.
