Too verbose, barely manages a cohesive argument, takes too long to get to the point, and probably written by ChatGPT. C-, see me after class.

God and I didn't even include citations/bibliography, at this rate I'll never get published and peer reviewed in Dungeon magazine

kallenhale•

Not sure what you're trying to say buddy but maybe take some deep breaths and think before you type you seem to be very negative wanting attention...I've heard of this it's called trolling

Good try buddy I'd love to have an intelligent conversation about what you feel is wrong with an obvious satire post with you when you learn to not insult others to make yourself feel self important

Ms-Sarahphim•

Your sarcasm needs a better hiding spot

6
OddsbodOP•

Honestly wondering if instead of a hiding spot the sarcasm needed neon lights, that one poster losing their gourd across this thread is sending me

6

Yah you get ‘em!

Rhunt2021•

I thought the purpose of a place like reddit was to let people write in their own style.

5
OddsbodOP•

Haven't you seen all the meta posts we've been getting this week? Writing with anything less than the acumen of a ProPublica investigation is unforgivable, going forward the subreddit house style will be two sentence posts where one sentence is just naming the game system you were playing, and the other is a link to the wikipedia page for whatever felony or misdemeanor a weird stranger committed at your table.

6
Alien_Diceroller•

It's fun to complain, though!

It would be nice if people stuck to the basic writing guidelines since they make the stories easier to read and more focused. I'm sure there are some fun stories that are missed out because they're hard to follow or way too wordy.

Jokey-mode off, my genuine thoughts on this are that in the same way a lot of people who haven't tried to write their experiences for an audience before will end up writing difficult-to-digest posts, a lot of people in that audience are likewise not very good at pointing out what ought to be adjusted to improve on that writing -- good at noticing that a problem *exists*, absolutely, but advising on how to fix it, maybe not. Like the one that got super upvoted the other day, about not reading background info because "it never matters" -- the problem is that having extremely intensive background for every involved player overloads a reader with how much they might feel expecting to remember and consider relevant to whatever event the OP is describing, and make the overall story hard to follow. 'Don't post too much background because I don't care' is a poor way of actually expressing that, because *some* degree of miscellaneous and not-strictly-relevant background info about an OP's personal life is just part of how people recount a story.

Frankly, I think most people who'd be posting an especially messy, near-impossible-to-read story like the one meta posts tend to complain about would be people who've never looked at the pinned post that's always at the front of the subreddit front page, and also aren't regular enough users to ever notice these one-off meta posts about bad writing habits -- they're basically just vents by and for long term users who already know not to write like this, couched as advice yelled into the wind at a hypothetical bad poster.

This is very true.

You're an insightful person, internet stranger.

Buddy, are you ok? Like genuinely this is a wild amount of overreaction to some meta posts. If it's bothering you that much just unfollow the sub for a few days while people have their meta convos or just don't read any of the posts tagged as meta.

6
OddsbodOP•

I'm kinda baffled that this, a satire post of me being honestly kind of bitchy about the recent glut in meta posts complaining about writing, has somehow provoked a rando who is about one gorillion times more up-in-arms over meta posts and decided this is actually the face of the Enemy. Best guess, you think this is a troll, or something genuinely going bananas over meta posting?

Can’t tell if people are downvoting you because they couldn’t find the sarcasm or if the buzzkills that want two-sentence horror stories to be the norm are out in full swing, but this is hilarious and I appreciate it

ty for the kind words i'll give you a shoutout when my rpg horror writing is finally published in a reputable scholarly journal somewhere

And everyone says we should keep posting meta posts on here!. This is the point I’ve been trying to make for days now!. We need a mod who can take care of narcissists like this trying to mold their hobby into their sick desires!.

OddsbodOP•

Really the hobby of tabletop rpgs exists to enable the hobby of writing rpg horror stories. In Q3 of 2023 I plan to launch a kickstarter for a new fantasy adventure ttrpg explicitly geared to cause as much irl drama between players as possible, to ensure a constant flow of stories to this subreddit. (In addition to the base engine, it will have OSE, PbtA, and 5e skews)

Once this system has had time to be widely accepted, I will contact the subreddit moderators to have everyone else's posting permissions revoked; this will ensure r/rpghorrorstories maintains the highest level of post-quality going forward.

I'm pretty sure its a joke, but its a good one.

My first act as admin of r/rpghorrorstories is all horror stories must have a thesis statement at the end explaining if this qualifies as horror, terror, or gross-out, and to point out where in the horror tradition they are drawing their references. I will be sending out e-copies of Ann and Jeff Vandermeer's The Weird anthology collection to provide a suitable spread of references.
