Hunters who have survived account management

Sales Career Q&A

Any hunters out there who survived 3+ years of account management successfully with goal of advancing back into a Hunter role? At an old school shop I really like, but not being able to hunt net new is killing me. The hierarchy is strong seeing as how many old school folks are around, actual Hunter roles seem to be a position granted based on tenure or familial connections. That doesn’t bother me because I’m confident I can prove myself, just trying to determine if I’ll lose my mind farming for the next two years at a slow pace and feeling like I’m losing some of the skills that make the game worth the stress. Advice from anyone who’s been here please?!?!?! Killing myself by managing less than 100 accounts and having to triple check that people are okay with me “working their accounts” (many of which they haven’t even talked to anyone at the places for years, their contacts have literally quit, moved on, or retired, but they aren’t willing to budge on ‘em) and realize the margin for error is lower because if I fuck up, that account is useless and can’t nurse it for the rest of the year. Used to having full control of my book and this is a killer. Might just be mental but feels existentially draining to basically have to discipline myself not to do extra or to only be reactive to the few accounts that are decent in my turf. Trying not to be a whiner and truly like the product so does anyone think this is moving backwards? Should I stick it out indefinitely? Especially in this economic climate, trying to embrace the lack of risk but it makes work monotonous and I need a challenge to stay engaged. Should I ask for extra work? Will that be complain-y? Thanks in advance for any advice.
